General text about our Viking breed Gute!
The Gute sheep's coat is a rustic and varied "fleece" that reflects the breed's origin as a primitive outdoor sheep. Unlike modern sheep breeds, the Gute sheep has a coat consisting of both coarse guard hairs and soft ground wool, which provides fantastic protection against both wet and cold.
Characteristics of the coat:
- Appearance: The coat is often shorter and straighter than that of a fur sheep, with abundant mane (collar) and dead hair.
- Color: There is a wide range of colors, from white and scaly to various shades of gray and sometimes even black.
- Natural shedding: A unique feature is that the wool often sheds on its own in early summer, meaning they do not need to be shorn in the traditional way, although this is common.
- Quality: Lambs have super soft wool, while older animals have a coarser, more characterful coat that is highly prized for its fluffiness and warmth retention.
The coat is a testament to how well adapted the good sheep is to a year-round outdoor life, and that includes the use of the fine lambskin pelts.
